HISTORY OF 4 WING
4 Wing was constructed by the French Army engineers
in 1953 with the cost of construction coming out of German War Reparation
funds. On its completion in 1954, it was turned over to NATO and was assigned
to the Canadian Government, thus became #4 Wing RCAF Originally the
wing was equipped with 3 squadrons of F86 Sabres; 444, 422 and 414 as
well as a compliment of T-33's for instrument training. In 1957 414 squadron
was disbanded to make room for 419 squadron equipped with CF1001's. This
change was to fulfill the Canadian all-weather commitment to NATO. I At
the end of 1962, 419 squadron was disbanded leaving only 2 squadrons on
the wing. In March 63, 444 squadron lost its Sabres but was reactivated
in June with CF104 Starfighters. Also in the same year, 422 lost its Sabres
in April and was reactivated in August with CF104's, February 1964 saw
the arrival of 421 squadron from 2 Wing and 4 wing was again a 3 squadron
Wing.
Our Crest
The 4 Wing crest is symbolic of the wing and its location.
The black circle represents the Black Forest with the blue across it symbolic
of the Rhine River. With the 3 pennants emblematic of our squadrons the
motto AUF WACHT (On Watch) is most fitting.
