 Re: 422 Squadron Photo
Air to air gunnery was practiced by shooting" with the guns at a drogue flag made of a fiberglass cloth with a bullseye painted on it and towed behind a target aircraft. This flag was attached to the tow aircraft by a 100 foot cable. The cable was secured in the left speed brake well of an F-86 target aircraft. Re: 422 Squadron Photo
S/L P. J. Higgs, CD S/L P.J. Higgs became 422's commander in March 1963, just prior to the end of the Sabre era. His promotion to Wing Commander appears to have occurred shortly after he assumed this command. The last operational flight for 422 was executed on April 11, 1963 and his command terminated with 422's deactivation as a Sabre squadron on April 15, 1963. Several days later, the F-86's were ferried from Baden Soellingen to Prestwick, Scotland for disposal.
