F/Sgt J.W.G. Guy Fortier
passed away in 2007
In 1972, six years after I retired from the RCAF, I
worked in the Department of Finance in Ottawa. I rode a bus to work
and to keep occupied, I wrote about my 20-year stint in the RCAF. This
is where this book comes from. Last February, I dug it out and sent
it to my friend Howie Hunt, a professional cartoonist who served in
the RCAF Central Band during the war. He encouraged me to get it published
and volunteered to supply cartoons for it.
I owe thanks to my golfing buddy Neil McDonald who
did a first edit, and to Mike McDade. Mike is mentioned in the book.
He was happy to go through the text, make corrections, and suggest better
wording. To him I am grateful. But most of all, I owe my thanks to my
wife Jill, who stuck with me all these years, and who, throughout all
my travels, kept our family together.
Although all the stories are true, I might have expanded
some a bit, memory being what it is, along with human nature's bent
to forget the bad and remember the good. This book is dedicated to musicians
who served in RCAF bands, and to that wonderful thing that once existed,
the Royal Canadian Air Force.
